Reviews…
“The Comrades theater company delivers a very well-acted staging of Kenneth Lin’s crisp political drama. It’s the story of Chinese-American politician Julius Lee (Ben Veatch), a New York state assemblyman whose idealism, intelligence, oratorical skills, and personal biography (practicing Christian, U.S. Marine veteran, family man) suggest he has a bright future on the national stage—until his patron, political consultant Nathan Berkshire (Scott Olson), uncovers a toxic relationship dating back to Julius’s college days. When Julius’s ex-girlfriend, Holly Eames (Alison Plott), accuses him of having sexually harassed her 20 years earlier, Nathan must work out a deal to protect his protege.
Lin’s crackling dialogue and insight into the ambiguities of human nature make this 80-minute one-act compelling and thought-provoking entertainment. Under Carol Ann Tan’s direction, it proves especially timely now in the context of the #MeToo movement and the recent furor surrounding Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court.”
